A Few Terms Worth Knowing
If you're newer to the industry — or just want a refresher — here are some terms that show up a lot in the headlines above:
- FMCSA — The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the federal agency that regulates commercial drivers and carriers.
- CDL — Commercial Driver's License, required to operate most commercial motor vehicles.
- ELD — Electronic Logging Device, used to record hours of service automatically.
- HOS — Hours of Service, the federal rules limiting how long you can drive before resting.
- Spot Rate — The price to move a load negotiated on a one-time basis, as opposed to a long-term contract rate.
- TEU — Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit, the standard measurement for shipping container volume at ports.
- Non-Domiciled CDL — A CDL issued to someone who isn't a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, currently a hot topic in FMCSA rulemaking.
